‘Ripples of Time’ 1st Prize at EGC 2021
It is with great pride and honour that we can announce that with his work ‘Ripples of Time’, Cypriot glass artist Yorgos Papadopoulos won the 1st prize at the 2021 edition of the prestigious European Glass Context. The jury was very much looking for both the personal and the beauty in the 62 exhibited works.
Dr. Sven Hauschke is Director of Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg and European Museum of Modern Glass (Germany). Other members of the jury were Jean Blanchaert, director of Blanchaert Gallery, curator of the last edition of Homo Faber (Italy), and Nina Husted Erichsen, Head of Programme, Royal Danish Academy, Programme for Crafts in Glass and Ceramics on Bornholm, (Denmark). Jeff Zimmer won the 2nd prize for his very moving installation ‘Shadow / Shelter’.
The jury wrote this about the work:
“Ripples of Time” tells a personal story about war, displacement and loss. It tells a story everyone can be part of — in the past and more than ever in the 20th and 21st century. The inconscious world of Papadopoulos remembers the Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus 47 years ago through 6 blue glass squares. Cyprus was occupied, but the mind of the Cypriots remained free.
Yorgos Papadopoulos, who trained as a glass painter, uses glass as a metaphor: fragility, destruction and transparency. The six glass panels are placed in a specific order. They represent six events. Basically each panel is focused, but the focus widens. At the beginning it is very narrow, at the end it opens to a new perspective. It reminds us of Greek mythology, of Ithaca (Odyssey XXI), when Ulysses thanks to his old arch, focused and kills his enemies with arrows.
Papadopoulos uses Glass as e medium. Glass is a fluid material, even when it is cold. In this installation, glass is very much alive.
The financial award for the 1st Prize was €10,000.
