Confluences

Invited to exhibit in Venice, glass artist Yorgos Papadopoulos brings an experimental, process-driven practice into a city where centuries of tradition meet the most current strands of contemporary art. Extending a dialogue between architecture, glass and site, it is a new recognition of his practice after the masterclass in Pilchuck, the 1st prize at the European Glass Context in Bornholm of 2021 and the Venice Glass Week of 2024.

Aperture on the Invisible

Here glass is transformed into a meditation on the unseen that profoundly shapes human experience. The installation centres on the Pendulum of Life, a constellation of suspended glass disks that channel light into movement and space. They are the ‘evil-eye’ amulets, reimagined as carriers of concepts, values, and attitudes that sustain communities’ diverse connections. One kaleidoscopic piece evokes playful wonder, opening onto joy as an invisible form.

Crown of Light

In Crown of Light, Byzantine iconography merges with contemporary art’s pursuit of novelty. The sacred is shattered and reborn, meeting the shock of the new: an Ecce Homo-inspired icon of Christ crowned with thorns, its forms upended by fluorescent pink glow and fractured glass. Traditional icons mediate realms through ritualised pigments and panels, demanding piety. Yet today’s art scene values disruption. Ancient light theology is translated into synthetic luminosity, creating a divine paradox: fragile surfaces that crack like faith, yet refract infinite renewal. Tradition thrives in reinvention.
